Making it snow- Making the doe

The "making it snow" part refers to what happens when steak knife meets styrofoam. So glad we had the shop vac at school! Seriously, though it was an interesting learning experience for me. I've never carved a sculpture before, preferring the 2-D arts. I have a lot of admiration for sculptors now. Being a subtractive process, you really have to know what you are lopping off. I proceeded to carve what I thought might work without really knowing if the coating I intended to use would be thin enough for the cracks, etc. to show up. I lucked out (whew) I used Duraflex, premixed in a white color and added dye and tempera paint to it to lessen the amount of painting I will have to do to finish this rock so it blends in with the painting. It is not yet perfect, but I can envision the finished cliff and am very pleased with the effect this coating has.

the "making the doe" is the image below. she is also not yet finished, but close. I still have to make the background work with her and I need to add some more foreground detail, but at least we no longer have the albino deer! It felt good to go back to normal painting on Sunday, after "rocking" on Saturday.

Next few trips will hopefully be throughout the week, plugging away.
